  • ability to analyze issues and situations in business with a specifically global dimension.

  3. Two letters of recommendation; at least one from an academic reference specifically addressing the candidate's ability to successfully embark on and finish a doctorate research degree, and, if the student is currently employed, one from the current employer, specifically also addressing the employer's commitment to free up a significant portion of the work week for the candidate (about two days per week, not including weekends and vacations) to spend on the DBA throughout the duration of the DBA program;

CURRICULUM structure

puce Overall curriculum structure

The DBA program consists of course work and supervised research resulting in a DBA thesis. The course work has a focus on qualitative and quantitative research methods for business students and emphasizes current issues in the main business disciplines as well as selected themes that fit both the student population preferences and the strengths of ESC Rennes.

The program will typically take 48 months, with a possibility for fast students to complete the degree in 36 months. The program is offered by ESC Rennes in close collaboration with BUPT, with courses taught by professors from ESC Rennes or BUPT, sometimes through co-teaching, and individual thesis research supervision offered by an ESC Rennes supervisor and a BUPT co-supervisor.

Each course has a load of 5 ECTS (9*5=45 ECTS). Proposal preparation equals 5+10=15 ECTS, and thesis work, write-up and defense is 140 ECTS, resulting in a total of 200 ECTS. 1 ECTS equals 28 hours of total time spent by an individual student (classroom time, preparation, exam).

puce Degree awarding criteria

Completion of the DBA program requires achieving all 200 ECTS as outlined in the program, within the time limit of 5 years. This time limit may be extended based on a written request, stating the reason for the delay, to the DBA Director.

To recognize exceptionally good DBA students who not only consistently achieved excellent grades on the DBA course work but whose theses also are considered excellent, the DBA can be awarded with distinction or 'cum laude'. It should be noted that this distinction is rare and given only to the top 1-5% of students who meet the following criteria:

  • For course work it is required that more than 60% of the graded courses are in the EX category and no more than one course is in the PS or LP category. Pass/Fail courses will not be taken into consideration to determine whether this condition is met.
  • For the thesis part it is required that, at least 8 weeks before the scheduled oral defense, either the supervisor or co-supervisor submits a request to the DBA director to start a possible 'distinction' procedure. This procedure will only be started if the 'course work' criterion is already met. If so, two external reviewers from reputable institutions outside ESC-Rennes and BUPT (and without any ties to the student) will be sought out (and appointed by the DBA director) who are both considered to be experts in the area of the thesis. They will be asked to evaluate the written thesis and, ideally, also be part of the oral defense panel. When all four (supervisor, co-supervisor and both external reviewers) agree to the 'distinction' and the oral defense is passed unconditionally the DBA degree will be awarded with distinction.

puceFacilities

Students enrolled in the DBA program have access to the online library resources of ESC-Rennes in as far as these are accessible outside of the school. Details on how to access these services will be made available at the start of the program.
